rings around white cap eyes
« on: April 28, 2013, 07:34:42 AM »
Do the rings around white cap eyes change colors after the white cap matures? Max is a bit over 1 year. His beak changed from two tones to just yellow. The rings around his eyes are cream. I notice other white cap have orange/coral rings. Is the ring color just different for wc or does it change with maturity?

I've heard all sorts of things... but when I've had WC's which I've had both types that have had the orangish or the cream color ... and my WC's eye ring colors never changed at all.  I've heard where some say it changes to the orangish color in the breeding season along with the feet turning the same color.  Again, mine never changed color.

WC's take a good year or so to get their full white cap on their head and their beak may change upon maturity as well.

I've never understood the different colors in the eye rings and the Bronze Wings can be the same way where they are one or the other and I've had both types.  I always wondered if it wasn't more of a sub-specie sort of thing but no one has been able to answer my questions on that.

Thanks for info, Jan. That is a good theory about it being a subspecies quality. I will not expect Max's eye rings to change. When I read about the changing color in an internet article I didn't agree with other "facts" in the article so no surprise that this may not be true.

Julie - I am not sure about changing eye ring color when it comes to WC. See Jan's response above. I am not expecting my wc's eye rings to change.

Hm, that's interesting that some WC and BW have coral eye rings and some don't. Well, if Chante does, then I guess Raven would probably since they're brothers.
Same thing as the Pi's I've noticed the light eye ring with my Red bellied too, while I occasionally see pics with black eye rings for some reason.
Oh well, such a small detail. They're all cute anyway  :)

Looked up pionus subspecies. Interesting to me that I can't find documentation of white cap subspecies yet there are distinct differences in eye ring color of white caps - some cream, some coral. Other pionus such as BH and Maxi have documented subspecies with difference in beak color or variation in color of feathers for instance. I wonder if there are white cap subspecies but it just has not been studied. Eye ring color differences in wc are so interesting

Hmm, don't know, but maybe it's like the BW - there is documented a "Lesser" BW, but I read that many Ornithologists now disregard that and say there is only one Bronze Winged with no subspecies, and that sizes and color variations are just individual.

I do wonder if eye ring color in Pi's (besides hormones) has anything to do with amount of uv light exposure? Outdoor Poicephalus parrots get a black skin around the eye, while indoor ones like my Robin have light gray. I used to wonder why the variation before I read about this. I wonder if same with Pionus, there is some variable in environment that make a different color eye ring? I do remember Jan saying some of her birds varied too, and I am thinking she probably had all the breeders in the same area under the same conditions? If so, that would rule out my guess. I too wish we could get an affirmative answer on this :dunno: I wonder what color Raven will have when mature...

I think Raven will have a coral eye ring, both Chante and his brother Benjamin have very coral eye rings

Ooh coral would be nice :) I'll have to look at Chante's pics again to see it.
