Update on Raven's sinus issue
« on: April 05, 2014, 08:32:05 PM »
So recently I have talked to Raven's breeder, my avian vet, AND Raven's breeder's avian vet in Indiana (both who have seen Raven after the sibling's toenail puncturing his sinus cavity accident) regarding the sinus infection that is STILL evident despite several treatments.

So basically, after discussing with my vet and telling him the Indiana vet's opinion on what to do... We either re-culture then start an aggressive course of treatment involving me toweling and restraining Raven a couple times a day :shocking: (kidding right?!) and learn how to give him injections for at least a month. My vet's opinion is that he only would do that with REALLY sick birds who are dying (not acting fine and holding with only mild symptoms like Raven).
What MY avian vet recommends is that I see an exclusive board certified avian specialist Dr. Jenkins, about 70-80 miles away from me. Re-culture with him, and go from there.

The "good" news is, Maggie being a decent person as well as a caring professional breeder did reimburse me an amount of money that we had agreed upon after discussing the situation. At least it is something, which I figure many breeders out there probably want nothing to do with you after the sale. I'd still definitely recommend her as a breeder since this "freak accident" is in no way a reflection of her breeding practices.

So, this is where we're at with this. My dad needs care too, in and out of the hospital (not too serious, but still needs plenty of my time to help with things). I will get started with Raven soon as I can, but meanwhile dealing with hectic daily life. I'm just glad Raven is acting well and doesn't need urgent immediate care, but I still want this thing dealt with and over with ugh.

You have a lot on your plate. Hope your dad will be better soon. Do not put off the long distance visit to the other vet....address this as soon as you can. As you know pionus have delicate respiratory systems. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

I agree to take him to the avian vet and get a second opinion, and it is good that Maggie is helping with the cost.  Take care of yourself and good luck with it.  Hope your dad gets well soon :hbeat:

Maggie is a really good breeder. I have been to her house and seen how she cares for her birds and they are lucky to live with her.

Thanks all for your support in this. I'll take Raven ASAP  :)

I still can't help but ask "WHY ME??!!!" Darn it!! Not that I'd wish it upon anyone else, but you know what I mean...
