Title: Poe and I are back!
Post by: Kiwiwade on April 06, 2013, 12:47:06 AM
 :hello1: Hi everyone!
It's been a while since I was last being here. I'm bit sad that the forum is not taking off like before so I will make more effort to post often.

My work have been insanely busy and barely had time to even go online at home... :(

Poe is doing well and showing some signs of being "teenager" with bit of territorial behavior. Nothing serious, just within normal natural behavior of bird his age as he is reaching two in a month.
He has learned so much words and surprises my husband and I daily. His recent favorite words are "Chubby chubby Kiwi"...... Very rude! I told him its rude to call lady "chubby". He also learned to combine words and make them his own. It's creepy because he put together words correctly often. For example, when he wants me to pick him up, "Kiwi, good boy! Step up!" When he wants almond, he would come to us and starts whole routine of his tricks as he says the commands which I use to train him, then after the routine, he says "amond, amond" well, he says almond wrong..... :icon_mrgreen:

He is currently entered in pets photo contest at westhawaiitoday.com. So please check him out and vote for him if you have a chance :)
His videos are also posted in Youtube too, if you are interested.

Please let me know how you and your fids are doing!

Miss you all.

When they put words together in their own way and create context it blows my mind. This post encourages me to keep training! Incredible to be charged with nourishing these amazing birds.

Welcome back and keep posting

:hello1: Good to see you, and glad Poe is doing so well.  He sounds like he is thriving and using his language skills to his best advantage.  My zon says,"Love you, love you", when she sees me slicing cheese.  She knows how to get what she wants :wink1:   No doubt Poe does, too.

I agree about posting more.  It's a nice forum.

Hi Maxmom,

Thank you!

The funny thing is, Poe would never learn any words I want him to learn to say....lol He has his own "taste" for words and he pick and choose words he learns. One day I came home from work and he said " Hi Beautiful!" That is not something I say often at all. Then one day he calls me "Poopy Kiwi"....
My bathroom is in upstairs and when I go to bath room, I tell Poe "mommy is going to go pee pee and be right back" so now, every time I go upstairs, Poe asks "Kiwi Pee Pee?"

I believe Poe learns more from the normal daily conversations between my husband and I than what we try to teach him. Just like Alex the African gray!

Hi Momazon!

Good to hear from you :) I'm sure you get suckered into giving Zon a treat when she says "love you". We are blessed to share our life with wild animal which can actually say they love us in our language!

Hi Dartman!
Good to hear from you! Yea, Poe has pirate voice too. It's funny because he looks like a little baby with his big puppy eyes but he sounds like an old heavy drinking and smoking pirate! :biglaughing:

Let me know how Lurch is doing more too!

Mom and step dad made a semi surpise visit today and he got all excited sitting on the back of his favorite chair and started rattling off everything he knows, but not very clearly, more pirate then anything. I could make out hi baby boy, hi sweet heart, hello, and a bunch of his words that run together and mom was expecting me to translate :biglaughing:
He seems to like visitors anyways and knows mom and dad, I think he likes them in his own little way.

Cetan,

I love that your vid calls you baby! So cute  :wink1:

Dartman,

My Poe is absolutely a perfect little bird to us, but the only thing is he is so shy. We take him out with us every where in his travel cage and he does ok, but when some one comes to our home, he freaks out. The other day we had a cable guy came and Poe flipped out. He was screaming like bloody murder and jumping around ( because he does not know how to fly) then ran up stairs where his cage is. We are trying to get him used to others, but he is very timid and scared of every one other than my husband and I.....  :(
I wish he could enjoy some company of others like Lurch.... He is so talented and adorable but only we can witness his playful cute personality.... :icon_mrgreen:

Well don't feel bad, Nerd was always suspicious of anyone he didn't know and would do the wheeze and turn his back on them, sometimes he even did it with me if he couldn't see me clearly. However he would mostly be quiet and eye the strangers suspiciously from over his shoulder. Once he saw someone enough he would tend to come over and hang out with me, and maybe let them give him treats but it would take a long time and some friends he never trusted at all.

Dartman,

A lot able man came again and Poe really freaked out again..... I accept him for who he is, but the timid nature and all but it would be better for him if Poe wasn't scared all the time :(
Thanks for the tip and I will see how it goes. After all we have (at least I hope) years to go :)

Welcome back as well Kiwi and Poe! Glad to hear all is well down in Hawaii! How is Poe doing with his second year molt? Rio has just finished his second head of blue growth, but still working on the wings, tail and belly. We are going to let him keep his wings this year for flight recall training along with our CAG. Glad to hear from you!
Title: Re: Poe and I are back!

Hi Nykia!

Good to see you here  :wink1:
Poe actually had two molts since He joined us. Maybe due to him living in Tropic?
His head is almost completely bright blue with dark grey circle on his cheeks. Looking very much like full grown BHP, but I can see that his head will be more blue soon for he is starting his molting again.
His wings are still clipped but not severely. He has good lifts. I let his wings grow last time, but since he really does not know how to fly Nd the only time he fly is when he is freaked out of something, it seems to be very dangerous so we decided to keep them clipped for now. My husband and I would love to see him fly freely one day, so eventually we are hoping that he will gain more confidence and teach him to fly though.

How's Rio? I would love to hear about him more! It is so interesting to hear about another BHP in same age group as Poe.
Poe is very very talkative. I think his personality is naturally skittish and shy but make up with his amazing talking ability :icon_mrgreen:

Title: Help!! Poe is sick!!
Post by: Kiwiwade on May 17, 2013, 07:52:48 PM
I just got home and all of sudden he seems really ill. He has only passed urine all day ( all I see is no poop but urine on his paper) and he is fluffed up with clear liquid dripping from beak. He looks weak and not even moving around. He was perfectly fine last night but my husband told me that this morning he seems bit tired and poop was watery.
I am trying to get a hold of my vets but being Friday late afternoon, having a challenge.

Please give me any advise!!

The poor little guy needs attention right now. Probably needs antibiotics or anti fungal meds and maybe a shot to get him turned around. As I'm sure you know when they actually look sick they are REALLY sick as they hide sickness well in order to survive in the wild.
I'd find a emergency vet that can see him right now that knows birds as this doesn't sound good, hoping and praying for the best for him.

I guess you are on the Big Island. We have a vet that we normally go to, but there are two avian vets on Oahu I have used. Look for another avian vet with 24 hour service. It can't wait!

Thank you Dartman and Carla,

Im at vet right now. He is doing bit better seems like. Vet is checking his droppings for infection wtc. I have a wonderful avian vet here on Big island and she is working hard for him right now. Thank you again, you have no idea how comforting it is to have fellow bird lovers always there to give advise......

Just leaving vet and heading home for 45 min drive....and I have to go to work tomorrow 4am! Well, Poe has pretty bad yeast level so he will be treated with yeast infection meds. He staryes to pass some green poo while in vets officeand acted pretty much like his normalself. Im so grateful for my avian vet for seeimg him this late and she even made an arrangement to have another avian vet to look after Poe while she is off island for two days. We still have to mon itor him but most likely yeast infection. Where i live have been really humid and hot for the past week so it may have something to do with it.

Thank you again for all of you and really, you have no idea how much yoir replies mean to me!

So glad to hear this. It makes me realize I know very little about avian yeast infections. I wonder if Benebac would help? Got some for my babies and give it once a week.

Thank you all for your kind posts!

It was really scary experience..... Poe was completely fine on Thursday. Normal droppings, normal food consumption, and normal behavior. No sign of any illness. I meticulously monitor his weight, droppings, and food consumption daily ( so much so that my friends call me real crazy bird girl) so I am usually really good at noticing any changes, but this time he just became so sick overnight.
Yesterday, he was vomiting, I mean projectile vomit! No feces in droppings all water, eyes were half closed but both leg on perch, fluffed up, and usually super talkative Poe didn't even mAke a peep. He just sat there, no movement...... He was so weak that he barely can hold on to perch. Usually when you see a bird in that condition, pretty much life or death.

But thanks to my amazing vet and Poe's super strength.... He seems much much better today. I got home from work and he yelled " hi Kiwi, come here! Chubby chubby Kiwi!"...... How rude of him to call me chubby chubby after taking him to vet in the middle of the night and worked 10 hours with only 2 hours of sleep! But I have to say, the moment I heard him talk, I was just relieved. The silence of yesterday was making me anxious since Poe is constant chatterbox when he is well.

I'm really careful about his food, cleanliness, etc, but I will have to be extra careful during the hot summer months in Hawaii. I was told that little drops of  organic apple cider vinegar in drinking water can be very good for preventing yeast in crop.

Poe is now walking behind my iPad as I type this post chanting " peekaboo, peekaboo peekaboo peekaboo, " as he appear and disappear from my sight behind iPad.....

Nerds brother ferd bird was same way, perfectly fine in the morning, sick in the afternoon, and dead by 8pm that night. That was over 20 years ago, we did take him to the vet but he was so sick so fast, plus they really weren't a avian vet so he passed away that fast, very sad.
Glad the Poe is MUCH better an he should turn around fast now but just keep a good eye on him like your already doing, good luck little man.

Hi Everyone,

Poe just got his final test result back and he is as healthy as he can be! I'm so relieved....

I have been giving Poe some apple cider vinegar in his drinking water, a few drops is enough, but he doesn't seem to mind at all.
I also been even more careful about his fresh foods for where we live can be really hot and humid.

His weight went down about 10g during the time he was not well, but slowly coming back up. This experience really reminded me how important is it to have
a good bird vet, if possible have another for a back up. I called a few vets the night Poe was throwing up as I could not get a hold of my regular vet right away,
but I was completely blown away by how little they seem to know about birds and I can tell they were really hesitant to even see Poe due to lack of knowledge.

Have a nice summer everyone :)

What a wonderful checkin! Yes it is scary when one's avian vet is not available. I have been there. So hard to have suitable back up vet and of course our birds get sick on off hours. I also believe in unpasterized apple vinegar in water to kill bacteria, etc.  Poe looks great!

Thank you all! I know, I am biased too Cetan, but I think BH Pionus are really really pretty birds. Their vivid blue head, big puppy eyes, and just overall chubby look will melt anyone's heart!
I call Poe " Puppy" sometimes because of his big eyes and now he says " Hi Puppy"...
I waited 8 years to get BH Pionus before Poe and I knew this is the bird for me, I was totally right!

Organic Apple Vinegar smells horrible in a bottle, but a few drops does not change taste of water and Poe doesn't mind at all....hahaha

Yes I had been told by my vet one teaspoon  of unpasteurized apple vinegar to a pint of water. I think he said to use this for two weeks on a quarterly basis. Said it kept his flock healthy and is preventative

Maxsmom,
I am a beliver of Apple Vinegar now. Poe's infection went away soon after started to give him vinegar and have been giving him a drop in his driniking water daily.
His weight is back to normal and is very active just like he always is. He is also molting so I found bunch of his pretty feathers all over the house :)

Nykia,
I totally had a minin heart attack when Poe got sick! He is a tiny little bird but means a lot to my husband and I. My husband even left work early to take him to doctor... Just like any daddy would do when their "human" kid gets sick. People at work knows how much Poe means to us and they are all supportive.

Please keep posting how you and your fids are all doing. I love coming here and reading all of your post after a long stressful day at work so I can feel happy :hello1:

Poe is being a teenager!

He is 2 years and 2 months old so I guess its about time for him to be a teenage rebel.
once in a while there are period of a few days he acts out with loud scream, teritorial behavior and even some bites!

Poe is in one of those "Period" right now and is being handful :icon_mrgreen:
The funny thing is he acts all tough and claims his "teritories" but when 7:00 pm comes he turns into a baby bird and
begs for his cuddle time....... ( Which has been a daily rutine for the past almost 2 years every since we got Poe!)
Poe is still very affectionate and well mannered for the most part and his "teenager" things are not bad so I kind of enjoy
seeing him entering the new part of his life  :wink1:

I would love to hear all of your story about your birds "teeenage" behaviors.

Poe cuddles daily at 7:00 pm during the summer, but he adjust hisself in the winter to 6:15 pm....No joke, I think its so interesting. If we are "late" for our cuddle time which we call it " Wee Wee time", he would even ask us " wee wee time? wee wee time? come here!"....hahahaha
