Title: Went to vet today
Post by: Julie T on February 04, 2014, 09:41:37 PM
Aren't you tired of hearing about Raven yet?!  :wink1:

Well, all his test results from his initial vet visit came back. He is all clean... Except he still has this sinus infection that he got right after weaning. The breeder took care of it, and when he was shipped there were no obvious symptoms. After a few days I did see subtle signs, so when the culture came back with three different bacteria, it was no surprise. One was a fecal bacteria... which makes sense when his breeder told me how the infection got started in the first place - Raven's sibling ran over him and punctured his sharp toenail in Raven's nare. Fecal bacteria from the toenail! Also is why his right nare is a bit deformed now. He's still cute though.

Anyway, the vet and I agreed it would be better to have Raven get an injection, rather than me trying to give him oral meds. He doesn't really like to be touched, and I don't want to give him a bad experience restraining and medicating him everyday. He'd never forgive me, especially now when I'm still fairly new to him. The vet gave him the injections in each side of his breast muscle. I could hear him in the back screaming loud, poor guy. I felt so bad for him. The time release injection lasts a week, then in one week he gets another one. One of the bacteria is stubborn and drug resistant, but he said this particular medication should do it.
The worst part is, he said that once a bird gets a sinus infection, chances are high they will occur from time to time. Like people who tend to get them, it is usually not a one time thing. I hope it doesn't come back, but will have to deal with it if it does.

Glad he got treatment and will be ok. Sorry this could be reoccurring. What type of health guarantee did breeder give? How did vet recommend avoiding future infection?

The health guarantee only covers deadly disease unfortunately. Vet says even with keeping clean and feeding a good diet to keep immune system up, it 'could' still occur. I have known some humans who are otherwise healthy, but get a sinus infection every year or so. Just one of those things...
If it keeps happening, I might have to learn to give injections like the breeder did :shocking: to keep cost down. I was a vet tech at one time, but not for birds. Let's cross fingers it doesn't become an issue!

Was just wondering if breeder would cover vet cost as he came with this condition. Agree we take a bird in and just deal with whatever comes our way.

I really doubt it, though I will have to contact her. It's too bad it has to happen like this, but I really feel that Raven was the BW who was meant to be for me - the way things fell into place and I found him in the perfect timing.

Meant to be is nice. Life isn't perfect. One just deals with what comes :-)

Isn't that the truth!

Just like kids.  You plan on a perfect one, but real life is full of hard places.  Pi's are just the most wonderful, easy birds I have ever had.
