Title: Brought Blu into the house
Post by: Jan on December 20, 2012, 12:20:54 AM

I moved Blu from the aviary into the house for the winter. Last winter she stayed out all winter long but in the past few months she has been plucking out her chest feathers on and off... grows them in ... then plucks them out down to the bare skin. I have no idea why she has been doing that but she has been doing it. I do not think it is anything medically either. Everything in the aviary has remained the same except about 2 months ago I moved the 2 Maxi pairs from the other end of the aviary and put them near where she is at and the 1 pair has been in a cage across from here but she had been doing her on and off plucking a while before I moved them in her end of the aviary and I know it is nothing else in there bothering her like spiders or any other critters, there are spiders some what but no other critters can get in. Anyway, it got down to like 23 degrees last night and I have been worried because being that she does not have any chest feathers she can not keep her feet warm.

I am hoping now that she has come into the house as of today that she will grow the feathers in and leave them in and as of right now she does have them growing in and are pin feathers and starting to feather out on the breast area ... if she does grow the feathers in and plucks them back out then it is just something she likes doing! I know when I brought her into the house she looked around like oh yah I remember being in here before!!

I hope Blu likes being in the house and stops plucking. Have you had a vet check her out to make sure thrre are no underlying health conditions?

Well I hope it makes her happy again and she stops plucking. Like you said she would be cold anyways and safer to keep her in the warm house
Nerd never plucked, though he did like to over preen his chest when happy and it always looked kinda rough. Lurch has never done it either seeing how I think he finds fingers more fun to try and pluck skin from :shocking:

Thanks you two ... Blu is doing well and her feathers on her front and legs have grown back in now so she is looking good now!  She seems happy being in here and come evening, she hangs out in her jolly ball snoozing until I put her in her cage for the night.  Blu tends to be afraid of the vacuum so I have to be careful around her but she was always leary of it back when anyway.

Sounds like terrific progress

:shades:I know I'm coming to this topic a bit late, but just wanted to say Glad that Blu is doing better with their plucking :) It's always frustrating seeing a bird bald, especially when you're not sure what the cause is! Like little bald chickens, heh.
