Hi Everyone,

I'm considering getting a Pionus and am eager to learn from all of you :-)

welcome. Have you owned a bird before? Pionus are a terrific choice. Very independently play. Pretty sweet birds. What would you like to know? I have a 9 month old white cap pi and a 8 year old pionus that I recently adopted. Mine are boys and the baby is developing a vocabulary in his raspy voice. My rescue speaks very clearly. Have you met a pi in person yet? They can be shy at first as they observe and take in what surrounds them. Give them time and space and respect and they are a loyal companion

Hi there! Welcome to the forum.  We started over on here not too long ago so not much info to read on here but you can ask questions concerning Pionus and make sure you check out my main site on Pionus too if you haven't already at pionusparrot.com

I had a Maxi Pionus for 31 years, my best friend in his own way, Nerd bird,  rip. I now have Lurch, a much bigger Maxi with a atitude to match but he's slowly coming around. They all are individuals just like people and some will decide right away they like you and some will make you earn their trust over time. BUT either way once they trust and like you you have a loyal friend for life
They are a bit of work and messy but they also tend to be quiet and self suficient so they can spend time alone within reason without getting depressed, great companion birds all around.

Hi All!

Thank you for the warm welcome  :)

I currently have a female brown headed parrot and four parrotlets.  I've had a GCC, a cockatiel and a linnie in the past.

I love parrots :-)  I am trying to decide whether to get a maxi or a BH.  The breeder that my brown head came from has a clutch of each that are about half weaned so far.

While I understand that each bird's personality/situation is different, I'm looking for the quietest one in the bunch since I live in an apartment.  What I was hoping to find out is based on all of your experiences, which species, in general, is the quietest.  All my parrots are pretty quiet, including my brown head.

Should I be posting this question here, or somewhere else.  I'm new to this forum thing.  I'm going to go check out the other posts just now as well.

Sheri :)

I think that both Maxis and Blue Heads are about the same in terms of vocalization, and it does depend on each individual as well. I have an older Blue Head that I got as an older rescue bird. He was really quiet for quite a while except for some fairly quiet talking in a very gravely voice. Then as he got more comfortable he started to vocalize more and he also picked up my green cheek conure's yells! I now have a 16 month old male Bronze Wing and he still makes all sorts of baby sounds plus some talking and does a Woody Woodpecker sort of yell. He was hand fed but then not really handled and just spent time with his brother who was 6 mo older (same parents, different clutch) and a cape parrot boy about his age.
Where are you located? The reason I ask is someone in a Facebook group I am in has posted pictures of baby Blue Heads and Maxis that are still not yet weaned and she has been working with them.

Hi there.  Thank you for the information.  I'm in Canada.  Are you referring to Barbara?

It is in the Facebook group I Love My Pionus Parrot, her name is Margaret and she has a White Cap and a Bronze Wing but it is a friend of hers who has the babies and I know she is in Canada (I think Ontario)
