Title: Newby here!
Post by: Emciz on February 17, 2013, 12:54:03 PM
Hello Everyone.
I have just brought my first white capped pionus! We have called him/her Pepper and have had him now for a week.
I used to have an African Grey, but that one decided it liked my Dad so when I moved out some time ago Jay jay stayed at home.
So some years on, we now have Pepper.  He was hand reared by a proffesional, but hasn't had much attention in the few weeks prior to getting him.  He'll come to the bars and have a scratch and has started to chatter to us.  He's not quite brave enough for step up yet.
So if anyone has any words of wisdom for teaching him step up and any other ways of gaining his trust that would be most appreciated!  I am taking things at his pace and hes settling in nicely.
  Nice to join you all.
  Bye for now Emma.  :icon_mrgreen:

Welcome, we love pictures :shades: Just let him take his time and he'll come out when he's ready. Lurch came out once when my mom was here then didn't come out again for six months even though he allowed scritches through the bars. Some of these guys take a long time to warm up but they will, others become almost instant love sponges.

Yes my white capped male who is about to turn one year old is high energy!  I think it is a baby thing.

Emciz- I hope it is going well with yours. As it learns to trust it will be more interactive and step up. Try target training

Welcome to the site Pepper and Emma! White Caps are nice birds and are kind of popular.  Please post pics of Pepper in the Pionus forum area!
