Molting period
« on: January 08, 2014, 05:03:59 PM »
My pionus had her first molt in February '13 which lasted for 3 months.
She then started molting again in September and to this day has yet to grow new feathers. Is it normal for a molting period to last 3 or 4 months?

Welcome! It may be best to consult with an avian vet. Not sure this is normal molting. Let us know how it turns out.

Hi welcome... I agree with maxsmom about seeing an avian vet just to be sure what is going on. The molting cycle could be dependent on the temperatures in the house, and the length of light/dark cycle you keep in the house. A lot of times because of artificial environments of our homes, the molting cycles might not be too distinct either, or seem to always be molting a little. However, it's not usual to have these areas of down showing. Good luck with this. Keep us posted!
